Kanthal announces finalists for 2018 innovation award
Three finalists – BEST, Cortus Energy and Alabama Power – have today been nominated for the Kanthal® Award 2018 which recognizes global innovations in the area of heating technology and energy.
In a selection that spans three continents, the Kanthal® Award 2018 jury panel have announced three finalists noted for their innovative solutions developed in India, Sweden and USA: BEST (Bharat Energy Storage Technology), Cortus Energy and Alabama Power.
The winner of the competition’s final round will be presented during the Kanthal® Award 2018 ceremony to be held on November 13 in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Kanthal® Award finalists are:
BEST (Bharat Energy Storage Technology)
A start-up company into High Density Energy Storage field headquarted in Andra Pradesh in Southern India. The Indian company is recognized for pioneering work in sustainable energy technologies and has announced plans to open the world’s first thermal battery plant, scheduled for inauguration in May 2019.
The jury’s motivation: Energy storage is a crucial issue in order to be able to utilize the full potential of renewable but intermittent energy sources like wind and solar power.
Bharat Energy Storage Technology is nominated for their innovative energy storage and power generation technology, based on heated silicon and Stirling motors, which can be used to balance fluctuations in the grid.
Cortus Energy
A Swedish cleantech company founded in 2006 to develop and market the breakthrough WoodRoll® technology. Cortus Energy provides cost effective renewable energy gas solutions for power, industrial and transport applications. The company is based in Kista, Sweden.
The jury’s motivation: Biomass has great potential to help address the climate challenge; gasification has many advantages in this respect but also some serious obstacles to overcome.
Cortus is nominated for their unique and effective WoodRoll® technology which produces a clean renewable high energy gas which can be used in multiple applications.
Alabama Power
Alabama Power is an electric utility headquartered in Birmingham, Ala., U.S., focused on providing innovative energy solutions to improve customers’ lives. The company provides the valuable combination of unparalleled service, reliable electricity supply and competitive prices to more than 1.4 million homes, businesses and industries across the state. Alabama Power is a part of Southern Company (NYSE:SO), a leading U.S. energy company serving nine million customers in 18 states through its subsidiaries.
The jury’s motivation: Conversion of traditional heating solutions from fossil fuels to renewable electricity can make key contributions to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
Alabama Power’s Technology Applications Center (TAC) is nominated for driving conversion from gas to electric heating solutions in foundries for industrial customers, in order to improve energy efficiency, safety and quality.
