Europe has once again emphasized industrial electrification as a key element of its decarbonization efforts. On July 17, 2026, the European Commission announced a more ambitious plan to boost electrification across the EU, with an indicative target for electricity to account for 46% of the EU’s energy demand by 2040, up from just over 23% today. 

For energy-intensive sectors, this marks a major shift. The emphasis is moving from debating the need to electrify to finding effective ways to scale up the transition.

A more uncertain global energy landscape

Europe’s push for electrification is set against a backdrop of increasing global uncertainty. Fossil fuel-dependent energy markets are vulnerable to geopolitical tensions, supply disruptions, and price swings.
